Tin Bronze
Tin Bronze is a type of bronze alloy that primarily consists of copper and tin, often with small amounts of other elements to enhance specific properties. This alloy is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high wear resistance, and good mechanical properties.
Composition:
- Copper (Cu): Approximately 88-92%
- Tin (Sn): Approximately 8-12%
- Other elements: May include small amounts of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe) to improve mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.
Grades
ASTM B30 C92600:
ASTM standard specifying the composition and mechanical properties for tin bronze alloys.
BS1400 (PB1):
British Standard specifying the requirements for high-tin bronze alloys, often referred to as phosphor bronzes.
BS 1400 GL:
British Standard specifying the composition and mechanical properties for various grades of bronze alloys.
PB102:
A specific grade of tin bronze known for its excellent wear resistance and high mechanical strength.
Properties:
- Corrosion Resistance:
- Excellent resistance to corrosion in a wide range of environments, including marine and industrial applications.
- Particularly resistant to dezincification and stress corrosion cracking.
- Mechanical Properties:
- Tensile Strength: Typically around 300-600 MPa.
- Yield Strength: Approximately 150-250 MPa.
- Elongation: Generally around 10-30%, indicating good ductility.
- Hardness: Moderate to high hardness, with a typical Brinell hardness number (HB) of around 60-100.
- Wear Resistance:
- High wear resistance, making it suitable for applications involving friction and wear.
- Good anti-galling properties, ideal for bearings and bushings.
- Machinability:
- Good machinability, allowing for precise manufacturing and machining of components.
- Can be easily cast, forged, and worked.
- Thermal and Electrical Conductivity:
- Good thermal conductivity, suitable for heat exchange applications.
- Moderate electrical conductivity, sufficient for many industrial uses but lower than pure copper.
Applications:
Bearings and Bushings: Extensively used in the production of bearings and bushings due to its high wear resistance and good anti-friction properties.
Marine Hardware: Commonly used in marine hardware such as propellers, pumps, and valves due to its excellent corrosion resistance.
